What to wish for the lung-tree? It could become the emblem of all resistance to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and our world; one would write on it in big letters: ‘IT TAKES BILLIONS OF TREES SO THAT BILLIONS OF LUNGS CAN BREATHE—DO YOU FINALLY UNDERSTAND?’ It could also have a mystical destiny, as the lung-tree and its reflection in the water draw a circle suggesting the totality of the world. Or perhaps it is better to let the lung-tree contemplate its distant aquatic origin—when everything was immersed on earth, before the great leap into an aerial world, before plants imagined how to make it.
