Installation
The legend of Guénolé speaks to us through the imagination, of transformation processes, regeneration, links with the invisible, or the power of belief. The proposed installation is inspired by this legend, and particularly by the moment when Guénolé is visited by an angel, the vision he has and the action that follows, the miracle of his little sister's regained sight. One enters the sculpture through a door surrounded by wings. It is a way of experiencing the appearance of the angel, a proposal for an airlock through which one accesses the space where the vision and regeneration of the dead organ take place. This work is made of copper, mainly from pipes of different diameters used in plumbing. The choice of these materials is inspired by the presence of the Saint-Guénolé fountain, and the evocation of water circulations through these pipes. Copper is a durable material; the oxidation that will occur with a verdigris coloring will make the work and its color evolve, making it more immersive in the landscape, a sort of plant plumbing. The construction of this sculpture uses interlacing techniques used in plant construction. The technique used is copper brazing. These interlacings recall blood vessels, optic nerves, which gives this work an anatomical quality. A convex acrylic optical lens is placed in the orbital part of the eye, offering the viewer inside a deformed, magnified vision of what is outside. The perception of reality is thus transformed by the intercession of the angel and Guénolé. The orbit is oriented towards the sky, reinforcing the link with the spiritual dimension. The Eye of Guénolé is an installation that offers the viewer an experience around vision, from a physiological, metaphorical and spiritual point of view. It is interesting to revisit legends and discover the resonance they can have with our time. Short-term vision, blindness to the environmental and human issues we face, powerlessness and all kinds of beliefs that result from it, plunge us into great confusion.
