The Great Listening Set on the lands of Kermodé—amidst woodland and meadows—this installation pays tribute to the hare, a truly fascinating mammal. Though often overlooked, this animal possesses extraordinary hearing and a keen sense of smell, alongside remarkable agility, speed, and an uncanny knack for invisibility. With its large ears, the hare here evokes the act of listening in all its forms: Listening in the physical sense—through hearing; Listening that is attentive, focused, and receptive; And silent listening—tuning in to our inner selves and hearing the very essence of things existing within. The work offers multiple layers of meaning. The hare acts as a sentinel of the countryside; its presence reveals the health of the landscape and its biodiversity. Through its sheer scale and appearance, this monumental sculpture invites quiet reflection—an invitation to "The Great Act of Listening." Often associated with fear, the hare stands here motionless atop its coat of moss—pausing its perpetual state of wariness to gaze out over the countryside. I wish to capture that moment where the animal’s peace merges with the peace of the world, offering the viewer a poetic experience centered on listening and contemplation.
